Bad CV Examples and How to Fix Them

Updated

Most weak CVs fail in the same few ways: a vague profile, duties instead of results, missing or messy dates, personal details a UK CV leaves out, and a design that hides the content. Below, each mistake is shown as a fictional bad example beside a repaired version.

Bad

Fixed

Personal details a UK CV leaves out

The UK CV rules explain why age, marital status and nationality stay off, and your National Insurance number never goes on a CV.

Bad

Date of birth: 14/03/1990 · Married · Nationality: British · NI number: QQ 12 34 56 C

Fixed

Design that hides the content

Paste your CV into the CV checker to find several of these mistakes automatically.

  • Skill bars and star ratings with no words: replace them with the skill and where you used it.
  • Photos and graphics: leave them out for UK jobs unless asked.
  • Tiny text to fit one page: cut words instead.
  • Two columns sent to an online portal: send the Plain version instead.
