Each letter is written by the applicant in the matching CV example, so you can see a complete application.

What goes in each paragraph

A UK cover letter is usually four short paragraphs on one page. The blanks prompt each one; the example shows them filled in by a fictional applicant moving from hospitality into project support.

  1. Name the vacancy and set a relevant direction. State the exact role, where you found it and one sentence connecting your relevant background or direction to this application.
  2. Prove one important requirement. Choose one requirement from the advert. Describe a truthful situation, your action and a result you can support.
  3. Explain the employer-specific connection. Connect another relevant strength to specific work, priorities or services you found in the vacancy or on the employer's website.
  4. Close the application clearly. Confirm your interest, point to the attached CV, thank the reader and state the best way to contact you.

Follow the advert first: if it asks for a supporting statement or answers to set questions, write those instead. The cover letter guide explains each paragraph with the annotated example, and the cover letter builder lets you write and download yours privately in your browser.

Match your CV

Each letter uses the fonts and colours of the CV designs listed under it. Pick the CV first in the template library, then download the letter that matches. Keep the same name, phone number and email on both.
