Solicitor cover letter example

A solicitor’s cover letter is read by a partner, so it should be short and exact. Give the post and your admission year, describe your caseload with one example, then show supervision and the clients you bring in, and say why this team.

Dear Ms Chandran

Application for Senior Associate, Employment (ref. HM/EMP/112)

I am applying for the Senior Associate post in your employment team. I am an employment solicitor at Ashcombe Reid LLP, admitted in 2021, and I advise employers on tribunal claims, restructures and TUPE transfers.

I run about 30 matters at a time. On the contentious side I take claims from the ET3 response to final hearing, preparing witness statements, disclosure and schedules of loss and briefing counsel; this year that included a five-day disability discrimination hearing. On the advisory side I ran the consultation timetables for two collective redundancies at manufacturing clients.

I supervise a trainee and a paralegal, and I run monthly HR update sessions for our clients, which brought in two new retained clients this year. Education is already a third of my caseload, so your team’s work for schools and academy trusts is the work I most want to grow.

My CV is attached. I would welcome the chance to discuss the role with you.

Yours sincerely
Niamh Gallagher

Why each paragraph is there

  1. I am applying for the Senior Associate post in your employment team. I am an employment solicitor at Ashcombe Reid LLP, admitted in 2021, and I advise employers on tribunal claims, restructures and TUPE transfers.

The post, your admission year and your practice in two sentences.

  2. I run about 30 matters at a time. On the contentious side I take claims from the ET3 response to final hearing, preparing witness statements, disclosure and schedules of loss and briefing counsel; this year that included a five-day disability discrimination hearing. Your caseload, with one example from each side of your practice.

    A short close.
