Teacher cover letter example

A teacher's letter of application should show how you teach, with one example of adapting a lesson, then the responsibility you take beyond the classroom and why this school. Most schools use an application form: the same paragraphs work as its supporting statement, set against the person specification.

Teacher cover letter example: a fictional letter from Laura Whitcombe. The full text follows.

Fictional letter from Laura Whitcombe, the applicant in the teacher cv example. Every person and employer in it is invented.

Why each paragraph is there

  1. I am applying for the post of Key Stage 2 Class Teacher with responsibility for science. I am a primary teacher with QTS and five years' experience in Key Stage 2, and I currently teach Year 5 and lead science at Larkhill Primary School.

The post, your QTS and the experience that matches it.

  2. My class of 30 includes six pupils on the SEND register. In a fractions unit this term, my end-of-lesson checks showed four pupils could not yet place fractions on a number line, so the next morning my teaching assistant took them through it with fraction strips while I extended the rest of the class. All four completed the independent task by the end of the week.

One example of assessment changing tomorrow's lesson, with the teaching assistant directed: what panels want to see.

  3. As science lead I rewrote our Key Stage 2 science plan with each year group and run two staff training sessions a year. I would like to bring that work to a school where science outdoors is part of the curriculum, as your forest school programme shows. I also run a weekly science club and organise our Year 5 museum trip.

Responsibility beyond the classroom, and a specific reason for this school.

  4. I follow safeguarding procedures closely and record concerns for the designated safeguarding lead without delay. My CV is attached, and I would welcome the chance to visit the school or teach an observed lesson. Thank you for considering my application.

Safeguarding, which every school checks, and the visit or observed lesson most interviews include.
