How to Show a Promotion on Your CV (Same Employer)

Updated

Show a promotion by putting the employer once with your whole time there, then each job title with its own dates underneath, newest first. Give the current role the most bullets and the earlier role one or two lines, so the reader sees your progress at a glance.

Two ways to lay it out

Both are fine; pick the one that fits your design.

Employer once, roles underneath

Larkfield Home, Leeds | 2016–present Store Manager | 2022–present • Run a £3.2 million store with 22 staff. Deputy Manager | 2019–2022 • Ran the store in the manager's absence. Supervisor, then Sales Assistant | 2016–2019

Each role as its own entry

Store Manager | Larkfield Home, Leeds | 2022–present • … Deputy Manager | Larkfield Home, Wakefield | 2019–2022 • …

Say that you were promoted

The dates show it, but one line makes it unmissable: “Promoted to supervisor after 14 months” in the role entry, or a word in your profile such as “promoted twice in five years”. Our retail manager CV and healthcare assistant CV show progression this way.

How much to write for each role

The space should follow what the employer needs to know now: what you do at your current level, and that you earned it.

  • Current role: three to five bullets with results.
  • Previous role at the same employer: one or two bullets, or just the title and dates.
  • Several small steps: group them, as in “Supervisor, then Sales Assistant”.
