LaTeX CV template

A one-page UK CV written in LaTeX, for scientists, engineers and anyone who already writes in LaTeX or Overleaf. Download the .tex file, change the text, and compile it into a PDF.

It uses the standard article class and packages that come with the usual TeX distributions, so it compiles without extra downloads. The example is the research scientist from our CV examples.

LaTeX1 page
The LaTeX CV compiled to one A4 page: Dr Eleanor Marsh, research scientist. The full source follows.

Fictional example for a research scientist. Every person and employer in it is invented; replace every detail with your own.

Before you use it

Send the PDF, never the .tex file. If an employer asks for a Word file, or for a CV to paste into an online form, use the Word version of this CV or the plain template instead. Open the PDF you made and check that the text can be selected and copied, as it can in the one above.

Inside this example
  • Profile: 58 words here
  • Experience: 114 words here
  • Education: 12 words here
  • Publications: 32 words here
  • Skills: 26 words here
  • Additional information: 12 words here

How to use it

  1. Open it. “Open it in Overleaf” starts a new Overleaf project from the file in one step, once you sign in to Overleaf. You can also upload the zip file there as it is. On your computer, unzip it and open latex-cv.tex in your LaTeX editor. Or copy the whole file from the end of this page.

  2. Change the text. Replace the name, contact line and every section with your own. Each job or qualification is one line, \entry{title}{employer or place}{dates}, with its points in the itemize list under it.

  3. Compile and check. Compile with pdfLaTeX, Overleaf’s default. If the PDF runs onto a second page, cut a bullet or shorten the profile rather than shrinking the margins.

The whole file

Copy it into an empty Overleaf project or a new .tex file. A line that starts with % is a note to you and does not print.

\section*{Profile}
Research scientist with a PhD in biochemistry and four years in industry, developing protein assays at a biotechnology company. Plans experiments from design to analysis, writes up results for papers and grant applications, and developed a potency assay that quality control now runs on every batch. Looking for a senior scientist role leading a small assay development team.

\section*{Experience}
\entry{Research Scientist}{Fenwold Biologics, Cambridge}{2022--present}
\begin{itemize}
  \item Design and run protein expression and binding experiments for three antibody programmes, about 40 plates a week.
  \item Developed a cell-based potency assay that cut the time to a result from five days to two; quality control now runs it on every batch.
  \item Record methods and results in the electronic lab notebook and analyse them in GraphPad Prism and Python.
  \item Co-wrote a successful \pounds480,000 Innovate UK grant application for a new assay platform.
  \item Supervise two industrial placement students a year on their own projects.
\end{itemize}
\entry{Postdoctoral Research Associate}{Wexham University}{2021--2022}
\begin{itemize}
  \item Department of Biochemistry: studied how a bacterial enzyme binds its targets and presented the results at two national conferences.
\end{itemize}

\section*{Education}
\entry{PhD Biochemistry}{Wexham University}{2017--2021}
\entry{BSc (Hons) Biochemistry, First}{Northmoor University}{2014--2017}

\section*{Publications}
\begin{itemize}
  \item First author, two peer-reviewed papers on how bacterial enzymes bind host proteins (2021, 2023)
  \item Co-author, three papers from the Wexham University group (2020--2022)
  \item Co-inventor, one patent application on a potency assay (2025)
\end{itemize}

\section*{Skills}
Assay development and validation; protein expression and purification; cell culture and flow cytometry; statistics in GraphPad Prism and Python; grant, paper and report writing; supervising students.

\section*{Additional information}
Member of the Royal Society of Biology, working towards Chartered Scientist status.
