How to write yours

01

Name the products and industry

Rail interiors, conveyors or aero engines tell an engineering manager your context immediately.

02

Give a measured improvement

Weight saved, cost cut or failures reduced, with a number, is the evidence engineers trust.

03

List software precisely

CAD, FEA and data tools with versions or methods are searched for by recruiters.

04

Show registration progress

Membership of a professional institution and progress towards IEng or CEng shows commitment; give dates.

Checks and qualifications to mention

  • Degree. Most mechanical engineers have an accredited engineering degree or an engineering degree apprenticeship; give the class and year.
  • Professional registration. Chartered (CEng) or Incorporated (IEng) status comes through an institution such as the IMechE; say where you are in the process.
  • Confidential projects. Describe your part and the result without customer secrets or drawings you are not allowed to share.

Two pages are fine for experienced engineers; keep the current role, a measured result and your software on page one.
