Legal CV example for a paralegal

A legal CV should show the kind of law you work in, the documents you draft, the caseload you support and how carefully you handle client information. If you are working towards qualifying as a solicitor, say where you are in the SQE and how much qualifying work experience you have. This example is a paralegal in a commercial property and litigation firm.

How to write yours

01

Name your area of law

Firms hire for a practice area. Put commercial property, family, personal injury or whatever you work in at the start of your profile.

02

Say what you draft

The documents you prepare, and who reviews them, show your level better than 'legal knowledge'.

03

Give your caseload

A number of files, and how you keep them moving, tells a supervisor how much you can carry.

04

Show where you are in qualifying

If you are working towards becoming a solicitor, give your SQE stage and how much qualifying work experience is confirmed.

Rules and checks for a legal CV

  • Qualifying as a solicitor. The SQE route needs a degree or equivalent, both parts of the SQE, two years' full-time or equivalent qualifying work experience and the SRA's character and suitability checks (Solicitors Regulation Authority, checked 9 October 2026). Put your SQE stage and confirmed months of work experience on your CV.
  • Entry routes. The National Careers Service lists a law or legal studies degree, college courses, a T Level in Legal Services and paralegal apprenticeships at Levels 3 and 5. Give the one you have taken.
  • Accuracy. Legal employers read a CV as a sample of your drafting. One typo in a name, date or grade costs more here than in most jobs.
  • Confidentiality. Describe matters without naming clients or giving details that could identify them.

Two pages are fine once you have legal experience, but keep the first page to your profile and current role. A law student with no legal job can keep to one page and lead with education.
