Accountant CV example

An accountant's CV should open with your qualification, then show the numbers you own (month-end, budgets, forecasts), the systems you use and one decision your analysis changed. This example is a CIMA-qualified management accountant in a manufacturing and distribution business. For an AAT-level role, see the assistant accountant example.

How to write yours

01

Qualification first

Put your body and letters (ACMA, ACCA, ACA) in the profile, or your exams passed if you are still studying.

02

Say what you own

Name the reports and processes that are yours, with their deadline, not just the team's.

03

One decision with a number

Finance managers hire accountants who change decisions. One saving or margin gain shows it.

04

Name the systems

Finance adverts list systems by name; give yours, and your Excel level in plain words.

Checks for an accountant's CV

  • Routes in. The National Careers Service lists a degree followed by a graduate scheme, apprenticeships such as Professional Accountancy or Taxation Technician (Level 4) and Accountancy and Taxation Professional (Level 7), and studying a professional qualification while working. Give the one you took, with dates.
  • Part-qualified. Write the exams you have passed and the one you are studying, as the assistant accountant example does.
  • Confidential figures. Round any figure your employer has not published, or give it as a percentage.

Two pages are fine for a qualified accountant; keep the first page to your profile and current role, and cut older roles to one line each.
