How to write yours

01

Licence first

Categories, Driver CPC and points go at the top; a transport manager cannot shortlist without them.

02

Name the work

Trunking, multi-drop, tipper, tanker or curtain-sider: say what you have driven and carried.

03

Show you keep the rules

Walk-round checks and a clean tachograph record matter as much as miles.

04

Give shift preference

Nights, days or tramping: one line saves a call.

Rules and checks for an HGV driver's CV

  • Licence and Driver CPC. You need to be over 18, hold a licence that includes HGV and have a Driver CPC; to stay qualified you take 35 hours of Driver CPC training and renew your HGV licence every five years (National Careers Service).
  • Hazardous goods. Working with hazardous goods such as chemicals needs an extra certificate (National Careers Service). Give it if you hold it.
  • Points and record. If you have points, say how many and be ready to explain them; employers check your licence before you drive.

Plain and one page: transport offices often read CVs through an agency or an online form, and no layout survives every system.
