Artist CV example

An artist's CV lists what has happened to your work: exhibitions (solo first), commissions, residencies, awards and where the work is held, then education.

Galleries, open calls and funders read it beside your portfolio, so keep each line short and dated. This example is a painter and printmaker who also runs workshops.

How to write yours

01

Solo shows first

Within exhibitions, put solo before group, newest first, each with venue, town and year.

02

Say "selected"

For an open call, "selected" tells the reader your work was chosen, which is the point of listing it.

03

Keep the statement to three lines

Say what you make, with what, and about what. The full statement goes with the application.

04

Count community work

Residencies and workshops show funders you can run a project; give the length and who took part.

Rules and checks for an artist's CV

  • Portfolio. Art courses often ask for a portfolio of your work (National Careers Service). With any application, match the CV's list to the images you send.
  • Open calls. Competitions and open exhibitions raise your profile, and a-n The Artists Information Company lists opportunities (National Careers Service). Follow each call's word and image limits.
  • Working with children. School residencies may ask for a background check; say if you hold a current one.

Creative and one page: lists stay short and dated under a coloured header, so the CV reads well beside your images.
