Cyber security CV example

A cyber security CV shows how you protect systems and what happened when something went wrong: the environment you monitor, the incidents you handled, how you test defences and the certifications behind it.

Employers also read it for judgement, so describe your work without exposing anyone's weaknesses. This example is an analyst who moved up from IT support.

How to write yours

01

Describe the environment

How many networks, users or clients you protect gives the scale in one line.

02

Tell one incident

What happened, what you did and how quickly it closed shows judgement better than a list of tools.

03

Keep tools and certifications checkable

Name the platforms you work in daily and each certification with its year; leave out ones you have only read about.

04

Protect your clients

Never name a client with its weaknesses or paste real findings; describe the type of attack and your part.

Rules and checks for a cyber security CV

  • Background checks. IT security jobs need you to pass enhanced background checks (National Careers Service). If you already hold a clearance level, you can say so without detail.
  • Routes in. Apprenticeships include the Cyber Security Technologist Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship, and many people move up from IT support or network engineering (National Careers Service).
  • Certifications. The UK Cyber Security Council lists certifications and training for each kind of security role (National Careers Service). Give the full name and year of each one you hold.

Compact and one page: experience, tools and certifications stay together, and the plain layout reads cleanly in applicant tracking systems.
