Law student CV example

A law student CV is read for grades, a real interest in legal work and signs that you can be trusted with detail and with clients.

Put your degree and module marks first, then legal experience such as a law clinic or an insight week, then the part-time job that shows you hold responsibility. This example is a second-year law student applying for vacation schemes.

How to write yours

01

Grades first

Firms screen on grades. Give your year average and two or three module marks, not just the degree title.

02

Write the clinic as legal work

Interviewing clients, attendance notes and draft letters are trainee tasks. Say who checked your work.

03

Keep your part-time job

A job held through a degree shows reliability. Say what you are trusted with, such as the cash office.

04

Name the scheme you want

End the profile with the scheme or practice area, and change it for each firm.

Questions about a law student CV

Do I need a law degree to become a solicitor?

Your degree does not have to be in law to qualify as a solicitor, but you need legal knowledge to pass the Solicitors Qualifying Exam, which has two parts, and you also need two years of qualifying work experience (National Careers Service). Put your degree and your SQE plans together under Education.

Does law clinic volunteering count as qualifying work experience?

Qualifying work experience can be paid or voluntary, in up to four organisations, and can include a placement during a law degree or work in a law clinic, as long as it is real legal work and a solicitor confirms it (Solicitors Regulation Authority, checked 16 October 2026). Note the dates and who supervised you.

Should I put my module marks on my CV?

Competition for solicitor roles is strong, so you need to show consistently good grades as you progress through your education (National Careers Service). Give your average and your best module marks.

Do insight weeks and open days count as experience?

Work experience in different legal settings can help you stand out and show your commitment, and there are diversity work experience schemes for under-represented groups (National Careers Service). List each one with what you did there.

Minimal and one page: grades, then legal experience, then work. Many large firms take vacation scheme applications through an online form; keep this CV for smaller firms, clinic and pro bono roles, and a form’s upload box.
