How to write yours

01

Portfolio link first

Questions about a photographer CV

Do I need a portfolio link on my CV?

You’ll need a portfolio of your work to show your skills, interests and experience in photography, and posting examples online will help you get noticed (National Careers Service). Put one link in your contact lines and lead it with work like the job’s.

Do I need a photography degree?

The National Careers Service lists a foundation degree, HND or degree in photography or art and design, a college course, the Photographer Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship, or starting as a photographer’s assistant. Give the route you took; assistant work counts as experience.

Should I say what kind of photography I do?

It’s normal to specialise in one kind of photography, like fashion, advertising, wildlife or photojournalism (National Careers Service). Name yours in the first line of your profile.

How do I put freelance work on my CV?

Freelance work is common, and you may set up your own business (National Careers Service). List it as a role with dates and how much you shoot, like any job.

Should I list BIPP or AOP membership?

The Association of Photographers offers membership, and you can apply to join the British Institute of Professional Photography (National Careers Service). List a membership or qualification you hold.

Creative and one page: the CV points to the portfolio, so it stays short. The colour band suits a creative studio; for an online form, switch to Plain.
