Carpenter CV example

A site manager reads a carpenter’s CV for your card and qualification first, then for what you can fix and how fast.

Put the CSCS card in your contact lines, say whether you do first fix, second fix or both and on what kind of work, and give a pace they can plan around. This example is a site carpenter and joiner on new-build housing.

Profile

Qualified carpenter and joiner with nine years in housebuilding and refurbishment, five since finishing a Level 3 apprenticeship. First and second fix on new-build homes, from roof timbers and stud walls to staircases, doors and kitchens, at about one house a week to the site programme. Reads drawings, works to tolerance and leaves each plot ready for the next trade. Looking for a lead carpenter role.

Experience

Carpenter, Meanwood Homes, Leeds 2021–present

First fix on new-build houses: floor joists, roof trusses and rafters, stud partitions and door linings, from the plot drawings.

Second fix: hang doors and fit staircases, skirting, architrave and kitchen units, about one house a week.

Agree the week’s plots with the site manager and keep to the build programme so the plasterers and electricians can follow on.

Check each plot against the drawings and the snagging list before handover.

Mentor a second-year apprentice on site.

Questions about a carpenter CV

Which CSCS card should I put on my CV?

You’ll need a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card or equivalent to train and work on a construction site (National Careers Service). Give the card and its expiry date.

What qualifications does a carpenter need?

The National Careers Service lists college courses in bench joinery or site carpentry, the T Level in On Site Construction, and apprenticeships from Carpentry and Joinery Level 2 to Craft Carpentry and Joinery Level 3. Give the course or apprenticeship, its level and the year.

Should I call myself a carpenter or a joiner?

The National Careers Service gives joiner and bench joiner as other titles for this job. Use the title in the advert, and say whether you work on site, in a workshop or both.

How do I get into carpentry from another job?

If you are thinking of moving into carpentry, look out for short or part-time taster courses at your local college (National Careers Service). Put a course you have done under qualifications with its year.

How do I show I am ready to supervise?

With experience you could become a site supervisor or construction project manager, or move into estimating, contracts management or facilities maintenance (National Careers Service). Mentoring an apprentice or running a small team is worth a line of its own.
