Football CV example

A football CV has to tell a manager what kind of player you are before anything else: position, preferred foot, the level you play at and your last season in numbers your club recorded.

Then show how you train, recover and learn from games, and where you came through. This example is a semi-professional central midfielder, two years after an academy scholarship, asking for a trial at a full-time club.

How to write yours

01

Put your position first

Position, stronger foot and the level you play at belong in the first line of your profile. A manager reads them before anything else.

02

Give the season in numbers

Appearances, goals, assists or clean sheets, from your club’s or league’s records, for your last full season and this one so far.

03

Show how you look after yourself

How you train, recover and came back from an injury tells a club you will be available, not just talented.

04

Plan for after playing

A part-time job, a coaching or fitness qualification, or study shows a club you are organised, and gives you a second career.

Questions about a football CV

Is there a football apprenticeship?

Football is one of the sports for the Sporting Excellence Professional apprenticeship, at Level 3, which typically takes 18 months (Skills England, checked 3 November 2026). If your academy scholarship included it, list it under qualifications with the year.

What do clubs look for in a player?

The football option of that standard covers passing and receiving under pressure, the techniques of your position, the tactical decisions of your role, such as when to press and when to drop, and playing your part in attack, defence and transition (Skills England). Give one line of evidence for each, from your own games.

Which numbers go on a football CV?

Use figures your club or league recorded: appearances, goals, assists, clean sheets or a pass rate from the club’s match data. A manager or scout can check them, so never estimate. No club data? Leagues that run on the FA’s Full-Time system can record player stats as well as scores, and each league’s Full-Time site shows its scores, stats and tables (The FA: Full-Time, checked 4 November 2026). Your club secretary can tell you whether your league uses it.

How do you get into professional football?

The National Careers Service names three: an apprenticeship, being spotted in amateur sport by a talent scout, and sponsorship or a scholarship scheme (National Careers Service, checked 3 November 2026). Your CV is what you send with a trial request or a scholarship application.

Should a football CV give my date of birth and height?

A UK CV usually leaves out your age and date of birth (National Careers Service). If a club or a trial form asks for your date of birth, height or registration details, give them there.

Should a football CV mention life after playing?

Professional sports careers can be relatively short, so the National Careers Service suggests planning what you will do after competing. A qualification or a part-time job on your CV, like the gym instructing here, shows that plan.
