Armed forces leaver CV example

A CV for leaving the armed forces translates.

Give your rank and trade once, then describe the work in the words a civilian employer uses: the team you led, the stock and vehicles you were responsible for, and the checks you ran. This example is an Army logistics corporal leaving after 12 years to manage a warehouse.

How to write yours

01

Rank and trade once, then civilian words

“Corporal, Supply Chain Operator” in the job title is enough. In the bullets, write team, stock, deliveries and audits, not unit abbreviations a civilian reader has to look up.

02

Give the size of what you ran

People, stock value, sites served: the numbers translate across better than any title.

03

Say when you are free to start

Your leaving date in the contact lines tells an employer when you can start, so they can plan around your discharge.

04

Keep security details out

Name countries and exercises only as broadly as you are allowed to, and leave out operational details.

Rules and checks for a service leaver's CV

What resettlement support can I get?

The Career Transition Partnership is the official resettlement service for the armed forces. What you can use depends on how long you served: after more than six years, the Core Resettlement Programme from two years before discharge until two years after (GOV.UK).

How much resettlement time can I have?

With more than six years' service you can have up to 35 days of graduated resettlement time before discharge, depending on length of service (GOV.UK). Courses you take in it belong on your CV.

Do I need a health and safety qualification?

For warehouse management, the National Careers Service says a qualification in health and safety might be useful, though not essential. List yours with the year.
