HR manager CV example

An HR manager’s CV has to show what you decide and change, not only the casework you handle: the size of the workforce and the HR team you lead, the people plan you own, and results with before and after figures.

Then the change you led, the managers you trained and your CIPD level. This example is the HR manager of a 420-person food manufacturer applying for a larger HR manager post.

Profile

HR manager with four years leading HR for a 420-person food manufacturer on two sites, after four years as its HR business partner. Owns the annual people plan, leads a team of three and advises the leadership team on structure, pay and employee relations. Associate Member of the CIPD with the Level 5 Associate Diploma in People Management. Looking for a larger HR manager or head of HR role.

Experience

HR Manager, Calder Fold Foods Ltd, Wakefield March 2022–present

Lead HR for 420 staff on two sites, managing an HR adviser, an HR officer and an HR administrator.

Write the annual people plan with the operations director, tied to the business plan, and report progress to the board each quarter.

Cut the share of new starters leaving in their first year from 38% to 24% over two years, with a new induction, a buddy scheme and 30- and 90-day reviews.

Rewrote the disciplinary, grievance and absence policies to the Acas Code of Practice and trained 40 managers to use them.

Led the HR side of moving the night shift to four-on, four-off: consultation with employee representatives and new contracts for 130 staff, agreed without a formal grievance.

Built a monthly people report for the leadership team from the HR system: turnover, absence, overtime and vacancies, against the previous year.

Started a succession plan for 18 key roles; five have since been filled from within.

Coach the HR team: the HR officer finished CIPD Level 3 and was promoted to HR adviser in 2025.

HR Business Partner, Calder Fold Foods Ltd, Wakefield 2018–2022

Advised production and engineering managers, about 250 staff, on casework, restructures and pay.

Ran the consultation for 34 redundancies in 2021, from selection to appeals.

How to write yours

01

Give the size of what you lead

Staff, sites and the HR team that reports to you, in the first line of the job, tell an employer whether your role is like theirs.

02

Show what you decided and changed

A manager’s CV is judged on the plan you owned and the change you led, not on the cases you processed.

03

Give before and after figures

Leavers, absence, time to hire or internal promotions: say where the figure started, where it is now and over what period.

04

Keep people anonymous

Describe casework and consultations without names or details that could identify anyone, and round internal figures: “about 130 staff” rather than 127, “a third fewer leavers” rather than 33.6%.

Questions about an HR manager CV

What other job titles mean HR manager?

HR manager, HR business partner, HR generalist, HR consultant partner, employee relations consultant and talent manager are among the typical job titles for this occupation (Skills England, checked 3 November 2026). Search under each, and use the advert’s title in your profile.

What is the CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma?

The CIPD Associate Diploma in People Management is at Level 5 (RQF in England and Northern Ireland, CQFW in Wales), typically takes 12 to 16 months, and leads to Associate Membership, Assoc CIPD (CIPD, checked 3 November 2026). Give the qualification, your membership and the year, or say you are studying for it.

Is there an HR manager apprenticeship?

The People Professional apprenticeship is at Level 5, typically takes 22 months and lines up with CIPD Associate membership (Skills England). If you came into HR that way, list it under qualifications with the year.

What does an HR manager do in a small organisation?

Skills England says this role is likely to have a broader remit in smaller organisations. Say how many staff and sites you cover and what you lead yourself, such as recruitment, pay or training, so an employer can compare your job with theirs.

How do I move from HR officer to HR manager?

Our HR officer CV shows the casework, recruitment and records an officer post asks for. For a manager post, lead each job with what you planned, decided or changed, and keep one line on casework.

Professional and one page: the size of the job, the people plan and the results sit in the first lines. With more than ten years in HR, two pages are fine; keep the last four years in full.
