Profile

Management consultant with six years at a mid-sized consultancy, the last three leading workstreams on operations and cost reviews for NHS trusts, councils and retailers. Interviews staff and customers, models the options in Excel and presents recommendations to boards, then stays to help put them in place. Looking for a manager role in an operations or public sector practice.

Experience

Senior Consultant, Calderbrook Consulting, London 2023–present

Lead workstreams of two to four consultants on reviews of 8 to 16 weeks, for 11 clients so far.

Interviewed 60 ward, pharmacy and transport staff for an NHS trust’s discharge review and mapped each step from the decision to discharge to the patient leaving.

Built an Excel model of bed days and staffing that showed £1.4 million a year of savings; the trust adopted four of our six recommendations.

Present findings and options to client boards and write the final reports.

Spent six months with a council’s waste service while it brought in a new rota, tracking missed collections each week; they fell by a third.

How to write yours

01

Name the clients’ problems

Say which kinds of client you have worked for and what you were brought in to fix: costs, waiting times, a new service.

02

Give every project a number

The size of the review, the saving or change you found, and what the client did with it.

03

Show you stay for the change

Firms want consultants who help put a plan in place, not only write it. Give that its own line.

04

Describe clients you cannot name

If your contract keeps a client confidential, describe it instead, as this CV does with “an NHS trust”.

Questions about a management consultant CV

Which degree suits a management consultant?

You could do a degree or postgraduate qualification in business studies, finance, maths, science or management, and a postgraduate qualification like an MBA may also be helpful (National Careers Service). Give your degree with its class and year.

Can I become a consultant through an apprenticeship?

You could apply for a Junior Management Consultant Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship or a Chartered Manager Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship, which take between 2 and 4 years (National Careers Service). List yours under Education with the year you finished or expect to.

Can I move into consulting from another job?

You can apply directly if you have relevant experience in business management or finance, human resources, project management or IT (National Careers Service). Lead with the projects from that work that look most like consulting: a problem, the facts you found and what changed.

What do graduate schemes look for on a consulting CV?

Competition for graduate places is strong, so it may help to have a good degree, evidence of analytical, planning and communication skills, and work experience from placements, internships or temporary jobs (National Careers Service). Give each its own line with a result.

Should I list the Institute of Consulting or a language?

You can join the Institute of Consulting for career support and professional development, and foreign language skills could be useful because many firms work with international clients (National Careers Service). Put both under Additional information.
