How to write yours

01

Say what kind of design you do

Packaging, print, social, web or brand: name the work you do most, because a studio hires for the work already in its diary.

02

Give a result in design terms

Time saved on artwork, products launched or print runs with no reprint are results a design manager can check. Leave out likes and reach unless the campaign was yours.

03

Match the CV to the portfolio

Every project the CV names should be in the portfolio, under the same name, so the reader finds it in one click.

04

Keep the CV calmer than the portfolio

The CV is read for facts. A coloured header is enough personality; let the portfolio show your range.

Rules and checks for a graphic designer's CV

Do I need a portfolio?

Design courses build a portfolio to show your ideas and skills to employers (National Careers Service). Put the link in your contact details and check every project on the CV is in it.

Which design software should I name?

Every design job needs a good working knowledge of desktop design, image editing and publishing software (National Careers Service). Name the programs you use, not “design software”.

How do people become graphic designers?

A foundation degree, HND or degree in graphic design, art and design, graphic communication or illustration, or a college course such as creative and digital media (National Careers Service). Give the qualification and the year.

Creative and one page: the coloured band shows some personality while the body stays plain, so the portfolio does the showing. If an employer asks you to upload your CV to an online form, send the Plain version as well.
