Medical student CV example

A medical student CV is read for where you are in the course, what you have done beyond it and how you behave with patients.

Put your degree, year and expected graduation first, then a line or two on each placement, then audit, research, teaching and the job you hold alongside your studies. This example is a fourth-year student applying for a summer research placement.

How to write yours

01

Lead with your course and year

The degree, the year you are in and when you expect to graduate tell a supervisor what you can already do.

02

A line or two per placement

A reader knows what a surgical placement involves. Give the specialty, the setting and the part that was yours.

03

Give your exact role in audit and research

Say whether you led, collected data or co-authored, and give the result. An overclaimed audit is easy to spot at interview.

04

Keep patients unidentifiable

Describe cases by condition and setting only, never by a name, date or detail that could point to someone.

Questions about a medical student CV

How do I show where I am in my medical degree?

Medicine is a 5-year degree recognised by the General Medical Council, or 4 years on the graduate entry route if you already have a science degree, followed by a 2-year foundation programme (National Careers Service). Give your year and your expected graduation so a reader knows where you are.

Does the GMC’s student guidance apply to my CV?

The GMC’s guidance for medical students sets out the standards expected of you both inside and outside medical school (General Medical Council, checked 16 October 2026). Write your CV to the same standard: claim only what you did.

Should I keep the work experience I did before medical school?

Medical schools expect relevant paid or voluntary work experience before you start (National Careers Service). Once you are on the course, keep only the care work or job you still do, as this CV keeps its bank shifts.

Should I put a DBS check on my CV?

Doctors need to pass enhanced background checks (National Careers Service). Your DBS details do not go on the CV; give them when a bank or care job asks.

Classic and one page while you are a student: a supervisor reads it in a minute. When you qualify, the doctor CV example shows what comes next, with your GMC registration first and your posts by rotation.
