Office manager CV example

An office manager’s CV has to show more than administration: the size of the office you run, the budget you hold, the people you manage and the processes you improved.

Give each with a number, and say who reads your reports. This example is an office manager at an engineering consultancy applying to run a larger office.

How to write yours

01

Give the size of the office

How many people you look after, how many you manage and the budget you hold tell an employer the scale you are used to before they read a single duty.

02

Show what you changed

An office manager is hired to make things run better. Pick two or three changes you made, such as a supplier switch or a new check, each with its result.

03

Separate managing from doing

Appraisals, recruitment and disciplinary cases show you lead people; reception and post show you know the work. Keep both, with the people side first.

04

Name your management training

An ILM or other leadership qualification, or a Team Leader or Business Administrator apprenticeship, with its level and year, backs up the people side.

Questions about an office manager CV

Can I become an office manager without a degree?

You could work as an office assistant or team supervisor, then move on to become a manager through work-based training and promotion (National Careers Service). Keep that earlier job on your CV, with the people you supervised, as this one does.

Which apprenticeship leads to office management?

You could apply for a Business Administrator or a Team Leader Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship, which typically take one to two years; you will usually need five GCSEs at grades 9 to 4, including English and maths (National Careers Service). Give the apprenticeship, its level and the year.

Which courses help me become an office manager?

A foundation degree, HND or degree in business management, human resource management or public administration can lead to a trainee manager post, and college courses in business studies or business administration can lead to an assistant office manager post (National Careers Service). Give the course and the year you finished it.

What do employers expect from an office manager?

Employers will expect you to be well organised, to communicate well and to have a good working knowledge of the main business software (National Careers Service). Name the software you use under Skills, and show the organisation in your results.

Is there a professional body for office managers?

You could join the Institute of Administrative Management for professional development and training; with experience you could manage projects, cover for senior managers, or move into legal, financial, medical or educational office management, procurement or operations (National Careers Service). If you have a direction in mind, say so in the last line of your profile.
