How to write yours

01

Detail the last 15 years

Recent work is what an employer weighs most. Give it in full and sum up earlier roles in one line with the years.

02

Name current software

Xero, QuickBooks and digital VAT records show you work the way employers work now, which answers an unspoken worry better than saying you are adaptable.

03

Drop dates that only show age

Leave out your date of birth and the years of school or early qualifications. The qualification itself is what counts.

04

Say the hours you want

If you want part-time work, say so in the profile, so the right employers keep reading.

Rules and checks for an experienced worker's CV

Should I put my age or date of birth on my CV?

Age is a protected characteristic: it is against the law to discriminate against anyone because of it, including at work (GOV.UK, Equality Act 2010). A UK CV does not need your date of birth.

Which training bodies should I name?

The National Careers Service names the Association of Accounting Technicians, the Institute of Accountants and Bookkeepers and the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers. Give any membership with its level.

Should I list every software version I have used?

Employers usually train you on the system they use, so name the ones you know without listing every version (National Careers Service).
