Pilot CV example

Airline recruiters screen a pilot’s CV on a few facts before they read anything else: your licence, type rating, medical and hours.

Put them at the top, then show how you fly as part of a crew: the sectors, the planning, the briefings and the checks you keep current. This example is an Airbus A320 first officer applying for a long-haul fleet.

How to write yours

01

Licence, medical and hours at the top

Recruiters screen on these first, so put them in the contact lines and the first line of your profile.

02

Give hours on type

Total hours and hours on the aircraft you fly, and whether as first officer or captain, are the numbers an airline compares.

03

Show how you work in a crew

Briefings, shared duties and one abnormal event you handled show the judgement an airline assesses at interview.

04

Keep your checks current

Say when your last simulator and line checks were. A date tells a recruiter more than an adjective.

Questions about a pilot CV

Which licences go on a pilot CV?

You’ll need a Commercial Pilot Licence issued by the Civil Aviation Authority, and you must be 21 to get an Airline Transport Pilot Licence (National Careers Service). Put the licence and your type ratings at the top.

How should I show my flying hours?

You start as a co-pilot, and once you have at least 1,500 flying hours you can apply for a full Airline Transport Pilot Licence and qualify as a captain (National Careers Service). Give total hours and hours on type, updated before each application.

Do I put my medical certificate on my CV?

You need at least a Class 2 medical certificate before training, and a Class 1 to get your Commercial Pilot Licence (National Careers Service). Say that your Class 1 is current.

Do pilots need a background check?

Airline pilots must pass enhanced background checks (National Careers Service). You do not need to list them on your CV; be ready for them once you have an offer.

Can I move from military to airline flying?

If you have flown in the armed forces, you could apply to the Civil Aviation Authority’s Military Aircrew Accreditation Scheme to become a commercial pilot (National Careers Service). List military types and hours the way you would list civil ones.

Professional and one page: airline recruiters screen on licences and hours, so they sit at the top and the rest stays short. For the airline’s online form, switch to Plain.
