Finance manager CV example

A finance manager’s CV is read for the finance function you run, not only the accounts you prepare: the size of the business and your team, how fast and reliably you report, and what you changed in cash, credit and controls, with before and after figures.

This example is the finance manager of a £26 million building services contractor applying for a financial controller post.

Profile

ACCA-qualified finance manager with more than three years running the finance team of a £26 million building services contractor with 210 staff, after six years in audit and as a group financial accountant. Produces the monthly management accounts and board pack, owns the budget and the cash forecast, and leads a team of four. Looking for a financial controller or senior finance manager role.

Experience

Finance Manager | Fylde Coast Building Services Ltd, Blackpool | April 2023–present

Lead a team of four, a management accountant, two ledger clerks and a credit controller, reporting to the finance director.

Brought the monthly management accounts forward from working day 12 to working day 6 with a month-end checklist and earlier ledger cut-offs.

Run the annual budget with nine budget holders and write the monthly variance notes for the board.

Built a 13-week cash flow forecast, updated every Monday; the business has not used its overdraft since June 2024.

Cut debtor days from 58 to 41 in 18 months by invoicing within two days of an agreed valuation and chasing retentions on a schedule.

Prepare the quarterly VAT returns under Making Tax Digital, including the construction reverse charge, and the corporation tax pack for the external advisers.

Led the move from desktop Sage to cloud accounting software, adding two-person approval for any change to a supplier’s bank details.

Prepare the year-end audit files; the last two audits closed on the agreed timetable.

Group Financial Accountant | Northway Logistics Group, Warrington | 2020–2023

Prepared the statutory accounts for three group companies and the group consolidation.

Reconciled intercompany balances and kept the fixed asset register each month.

Audit Semi-Senior | Firth Lowe LLP, Manchester | 2017–2020

Audited owner-managed manufacturing and construction businesses with turnover up to £40 million, while studying for ACCA.

How to write yours

01

Give the size of the finance function

Turnover, staff, the companies or sites you report on and the team that reports to you, in the first lines of the job, tell an employer whether your role is like theirs.

02

Show the deadlines you moved

Month-end, the board pack and the audit are judged on time and accuracy: say the working day you report on now and where it started.

03

Name the cash and credit results

Debtor days, overdraft use and the cash forecast show you manage the money, not only record it. Give the figure before and after, and the period.

04

Say which controls you own

Approvals, reconciliations and system changes are what a financial controller is hired for. Name one control you added and the risk it closed, without client or supplier names.

Questions about a finance manager CV

What other job titles mean finance manager?

Finance manager, financial controller, financial accountant, company accountant, accounts manager, reporting accountant and systems accountant are among the typical job titles for this occupation (Skills England, checked 4 November 2026). Search under each, and use the advert’s title in your profile.

Is a finance manager the same as a financial controller?

Skills England lists both titles for the same occupation, and employers use them differently. Read the advert for the size of the team, whether you report to a finance director or the board, and which entities you would cover, then put those same facts in your first job entry.

Is there a finance manager apprenticeship?

The Accounting finance manager apprenticeship is at Level 6 with an integrated degree and typically takes 36 months (Skills England). If you qualified that way, list it under qualifications with the year, as you would a professional body membership.

How do I show tax and Making Tax Digital work?

The standard includes overseeing tax computations and returns for HMRC in line with Making Tax Digital. Say which returns you prepare yourself, such as VAT or payroll, and which you hand to external advisers, such as corporation tax.

How do I show audit experience on a finance manager CV?

If you trained in an audit practice, keep those years to one line that names the sectors and the size of the businesses you audited, as Marta’s CV does, and give the space to the jobs where you ran the month-end, the budget and the team.

How do I move from accountant to finance manager?

Our accountant CV shows month-end and budgets from the management accountant’s seat, and the finance officer CV the processing and reporting below it. For a manager post, lead each job with the team, the deadlines and the controls you are responsible for.

Classic and one page: the size of the business, the reporting deadline and the cash results sit in the first lines. With more than ten years in finance, two pages are fine; keep the last five years in full.
